Municipalities can be recognized as spas, Kneipp spas, Kneipp health resorts, Schroth spas, Schroth health resorts, climatic health resorts, places with healing springs, healing tunnels or peloid spas, climatic health resorts or recreation resorts.

Municipalities in Bavaria can be recognized by the state as health resorts, climatic health resorts or resorts on the basis of Art. 7 Para. 5 of the Municipal Tax Act and the Bavarian Recognition Ordinance issued for this purpose. The health resorts are divided into different predicates (spa, Kneipp spa, Kneipp health resort, Schroth spa, Schroth health resort, forest health resort, climatic health resort, place with healing springs, healing tunnels, peloid or forest health resort). An application is required for recognition, which is decided on by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, for Sport and Integration in agreement with the Bavarian State Ministries for Health, Care and Prevention and for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism and on the recommendation of the Bavarian Expert Committee for Health Spas, Resorts and Healing Springs.

The costs of the recognition procedure shall be borne by the applicant municipality. The municipalities are exempt from paying a fee. Expenses are charged.

Applications must be submitted to the district office and forwarded via the government to the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration.

The municipalities will be notified of the inspection date in good time. It will only be scheduled if the requirements appear to be met after the application has been reviewed.

The meeting of the Bavarian expert committee for health resorts, resorts and spas usually only takes place once a year in November. For the vote on recognition, the application must be ready for a decision by the time the meeting is convened. Times for reviewing the application, preparing the submission for the expert committee and the one-month notice periods for the site inspection and the annual meeting must be taken into account.

Municipalities that are recognized in whole or in part as spas, Kneipp spas, Kneipp health resorts, Schroth spas, Schroth health resorts, forest spas, climatic health resorts, places with healing spring spas, places with healing cave spas, places with peloid spas, places with forest spas, climatic health resorts or recreation resorts may levy a contribution to cover their expenses for their facilities and events that serve spa or recreational purposes.
