The evening grammar school leads working adults to a general higher education entrance qualification in two, three or four years of evening classes.
Classes usually take place five evenings a week. There are different language sequences. The choice of subjects and teaching methods take into account the previous education, maturity and professional experience of the adult pupils. The number of subjects is lower than at the Gymnasium due to the compatibility with work.
In the preliminary course and in year I, lessons are taught according to a fixed timetable. In years II and III, students take compulsory and elective courses - similar to the qualification phase of the upper Gymnasium.
Admission requirements for year I:
- Completed vocational training or regular employment of at least two years
- Minimum age of 18 years in the school year of registration
- Secondary school leaving certificate or successful completion of the preliminary course (see below) or successful completion of an entrance examination
- Passing a probationary period while working at the same time as attending school
Applicants without a secondary school leaving certificate can be admitted to the preliminary course of the Abendgymnasium if they have completed vocational training or have worked for at least two years and are at least 17 years old. Final admission is subject to passing a probationary period.
