The concept of a monument encompasses all types of movable and immovable archaeological finds from all epochs of human history. These can be, for example, ceramic shards, coins and jewelry, as well as settlement remains, burial grounds or fortifications.
Any search with technical aids aimed at discovering monuments must be authorized.
All archaeological finds can be assumed to be archaeological monuments. If the metal detector strikes, it is only clear what has been found after the find has been excavated. However, every excavation also means the destruction of the site and often the destruction of other finds in the vicinity, because not all finds are made of metal.
A permit can only be granted if it is ensured that archaeological monuments or sources for research are not endangered or if there is an overriding public interest in the research.
In order to minimise the endangerment of archaeological monuments and to ensure the protection of the public interest, appropriate investigations must be carried out in compliance with the Monument Protection Act and the corresponding prospecting standards and documentation guidelines of the Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments.
The competent authority will only issue a permit if compliance with the Monument Protection Act and the documentation guidelines can be guaranteed.
A qualification for limited research with technical aids can be acquired by completing the course for volunteer representatives of the State Archaeology.
You submit an application for a search with technical aids or for the areas / areas concerned.
After reviewing your application, you will be granted a permit if all the necessary requirements are met.
The authorisation may be subject to conditions.
In order to ensure that archaeological monuments or sources for research are not endangered by the investigation, the BLDAM offers courses for volunteer ground monument conservators.
