If you would like to apply for a fishing license, you must first take and pass a fishing examination (angler examination). You can take the examination at the lower fishing authority (districts and independent cities) or at recognized bodies.

The dates for registering for the fishing examination (anglers' examination) as well as the date, time and place of the examinations are set by the competent authorities as required and announced in an appropriate manner.

The fishing examination (angler examination) is a written examination in German. It comprises 60 questions, twelve questions from each of the examination areas of fish knowledge and conservation, care of fishing waters, fishing gear and its use, handling of caught fish and relevant legislation. The questions must be answered within two hours. The examination is deemed to have been passed if at least six questions in each of the examination areas and at least 45 questions in total have been answered correctly.

If you pass the examination, you will receive an examination certificate.

In certain cases, you may be exempt from the examination (see notes / special features).

Kosten

The examination fee, including the issue of a certificate, is 25.00 euros.

Verfahrensablauf

  • You register for the fishing license examination (angler examination) with the competent authority and pay the examination fee.
  • If you are not admitted to the examination, you will receive a written notification from the competent authority.
  • Once you have passed the examination, you will receive a certificate of successful participation.
  • You can apply for a fishing license from the responsible lower fishing authority with the certificate of successful completion of the examination.
  • You should then keep the examination certificate so that you can reapply for a fishing license if you lose your fishing license or move house.

Hinweise

The fishing exam taken in Brandenburg is currently not recognized in all federal states. If your place of residence is not in Brandenburg, you should enquire about recognition in your home federal state before taking the examination.

You are exempt from the fishing examination (angler examination) if you:

1. can prove that you have completed vocational training in fishing

2. have completed training in fisheries science

3. as the holder of fishing rights linked to specific waters or as a member of a traditional Spreewald fishing community, have successfully completed a special training course and have reached the age of eighteen

4. have passed a fishing license examination in another federal state and can provide proof of this.
