If you are planning measures or changes to monuments, you need a permit from the responsible monument protection authority.

Do you want to repair, modernize, redesign, change or otherwise interfere with the monument inventory? This requires a permit from the lower monument protection authority.

If you are planning measures requiring a building permit in accordance with the Brandenburg Building Code, the lower monument protection authority will be involved in the building permit procedure via the building supervisory office. In this case, the building permit automatically includes a modification permit from the competent monument protection authority.

Each measure must be described in detail. You should submit all documents that contribute as comprehensively as possible to the assessment of your project. These can be:

• Plans (e.g. location, floor plans, elevations, sectional representations)
• Documentation
• Photographs
• Expert opinions or preliminary investigations
• Cost and profitability calculations

Note: Contact the lower monument protection authority at an early stage. This will tell you which documents are required for your approval process.

You will usually receive approval if:

• the requested measure is to be carried out in accordance with the principles of monument preservation, or
• public or private interests that conflict with the interests of monument protection predominate and these cannot be taken into account in any other way or only with disproportionate effort (cf. § 9 para.2 BbgDSchG).

If you want to install advertising installations on monuments, you also need a permit.
