You want to remove a monument completely or partially?

If, by way of exception, you want to remove or demolish monuments in whole or in part, a permit from the lower monument protection authority is required.

This checks in advance whether demolition is absolutely necessary or whether the implementation of measures necessary for preservation is reasonable and to what extent features justifying the monument status can still be essentially preserved.

If you are planning measures requiring building permit in accordance with the Brandenburg Building Code, the lower monument protection authority will be involved in the building permit procedure via the building supervisory office. In this case, the building permit automatically includes a change permit from the competent monument protection authority.

Each measure shall be described in detail. You should submit all documents that contribute as fully as possible to the assessment of your project. These can be:

• Plans (e.g. location, floor plans, views, sectional representations)
• Documentation
• Photographs
• Expert opinions or preliminary investigations
• Cost and profitability calculations

Note: Contact the lower monument protection authority in good time. This will inform you which documents are required for your approval procedure.

You will only receive approval in certain exceptional cases or as a case-by-case decision.

Examples:

• particularly poor state of preservation / acute danger of collapse
   
• little or no original substance is preserved after renovation or restoration ("copy")
   
• serious other private or public interests (e.g. safety for life and health)

• Attach all necessary documents.
• Submit the application documents to the responsible lower monument protection authority in good time before the start of the planned measures.
• You will then receive approval or, if applicable, information about the rejection of your application by post.

4 weeks after submission of the complete application documents

Expiry of the authorisation

• if construction does not start: 4 years after approval
• in the event of a construction interruption of more than 2 years

(one-time extension of up to 2 years upon written request)

Partial destruction of large-scale archaeological monuments is also subject to approval.
