§ Section 1 (1) of the Occupational Therapists Act

You can apply to the State Office for Occupational Safety, Consumer Protection and Health (LAVG) for permission to use the occupational title of occupational therapist.

Working as an occupational therapist in Germany is governed by precise regulations. This means that in order to work as an occupational therapist in Germany, you need a state license. With this permit, you can use the job title "occupational therapist" and work in the profession.

Permission to use the professional title of occupational therapist is required to practice the profession in question. It must be applied for. The license will be granted if you

• have not been guilty of behavior that makes you unreliable to practice the profession,
• are medically fit to practise the profession,
• have passed the state examination for occupational therapists after 3 years of training,
• have the German language skills required for practicing the profession.

- Original official certificate of good conduct (not older than 3 months)

- Proof of health suitability for practicing the profession of occupational therapy (not older than 3 months)

• Passed the state examination for occupational therapists after 3 years of training
• health aptitude (this means that you are mentally and physically able to work as an occupational therapist)
• Reliability for working as an occupational therapist
• No criminal record
• Proof of the German language skills required for the job. This is normally language level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The costs generally depend on the time and effort required for processing.

You apply for permission to use the professional title "occupational therapist" in writing using the form provided:

• Download the form online and print it out.
• Complete the form and add the necessary supporting documents.
• Submit the application documents to the LAVG.
• You will then receive the required permit by post and transfer the required fee.

- LAVG will inform you if documents are missing

- for complete documents: 1 month

Sometimes documents are still missing for the procedure. The LAVG will then inform you by when you must submit the documents.
