Commercial pest control may only be exercised if, among other things, proof of expertise for a sub-area of pest control in accordance with the "Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS 523)" has been provided to the competent authority.

Competent is, for example, who

• the recognised qualification "certified pest controller" or
• has passed the examination to become an assistant or master for pest control in accordance with the law no longer applicable in the old federal states or under the law of the former GDR, or
• has demonstrably acquired comparable expertise in a Member State of the European Union.

Vocational retraining followed by examination as a "certified pest controller" or "certified pest controller" was possible until 2004. Since 1 August 2004, there has been vocational training to become a pest controller. This lasts 3 years and concludes after practical and theoretical teaching units with a corresponding examination at a vocational school. Further details are regulated by the Ordinance on Vocational Training for Pest Control. Further information is also available from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

The responsibility lies with the technical school.
