Since 1 January 2004, only eggs from a laying hen house for which a registration number (producer code) has been issued and which are marked with this corresponding producer code may be placed on the market (with the exception of direct marketing, see below).

The following are subject to registration:

• holdings keeping 350 or more laying hens, or
• Farms that keep fewer than 350 hens but market their eggs subject to labelling.

If fewer than 350 hens are kept and the eggs are delivered directly to the end consumer on the farm or at the door without labelling and unsorted (direct marketing), there is no obligation to register. Producers who market their eggs at the weekly market are subject to the registration requirement.

In Lower Saxony, an identification number is issued by the competent authority upon request.

The responsibility lies with the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES).
