For vehicles that were first registered for circulation at least 30 years ago, a red license plate (red 07 license plate) can be applied for. The date of the first admission is decisive. Registration plates issued before 28 February 2007 and whose (possibly three-year) time limit expires before the vehicle in question is 30 years old are protected by vested rights.

The red 07 license plate is an alternative to the H license plate and is particularly worthwhile if you own several classic vehicles. With the issued ticket, the vehicles registered under the 07 number can be used as often as desired. The number of the license plate begins with "07".

• current identity card or passport with confirmation of registration – not older than 3 months

  • If there is no Part II registration certificate, the data sheet must be submitted to a technical inspection centre and proof of ownership (purchase contract).

• Expert opinion according to § 23 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) on the classification of the vehicle(s) as classic cars

• Information from the Federal Central Register Certificate of Good Conduct (Document Type O)

• Confirmation of insurance for red license plates

• Confirmation that you wish to participate in classic car events and use the vehicles there

• SEPA Direct Debit Mandate for the Collection of Motor Vehicle Tax

  • This must be presented in writing in the original, signed by the holder, at the time of approval, also by third parties. In the event of a different account holder, the original of this mandate must be signed by the holder and the account holder. Proof of the bank details provided must be provided.

  • Alternative

    • a certificate stating that the main customs office waives the direct debit authorisation, or

    • proof of tax exemption

in the case of third-party processing, additionally:

• informal, written power of attorney of the applicant and identity card of the person for whom the vehicle is to be registered

• Vehicle was first registered at least 30 years ago
• Availability of an expert opinion from an officially recognised expert person, an examiner for motor vehicle traffic or a test engineer from an officially recognised monitoring organisation in accordance with § 23 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO)
• Presence of a good, largely original state of preservation of the vehicle

In addition, the requirements for obtaining a red classic car license plate may differ in individual cases. Please check with your local authority.

Once the application has been received, it will be checked whether the applicant is personally reliable. To this end, the authority responsible for the applicant and the competent police authority shall be consulted. The competent authority will issue a vehicle registration booklet and a separate vehicle registration document for each vehicle, even if only a red number plate is requested. This means that only one of these vehicles is permitted in the case of one number plate (pair) and several vehicles. Any use of the license plate must be documented in the vehicle registration booklet and with a logbook for the respective vehicle.

There are no deadlines to be observed.

You may only use this indicator in the following cases:

• Participation in events that serve the presentation of vintage vehicles and the "care of the automotive cultural heritage", as well as for the travel to and from such events
• Test drives, test drives and transfer drives
• Journeys for the purpose of maintenance and repair of vehicles

In this case, the main residence according to the identity card is decisive. In the case of legal entities, it is the registered office of the principal place of business or the seat of the branch.
