Animal welfare means the individual protection of each animal, regardless of whether it is wild or cared for in human care. It is about animal welfare, the protection of animals during transport and slaughter.

An important pillar of animal welfare is voluntary animal welfare work. In particular, animal welfare associations should be mentioned here. The majority of animal welfare associations belong to the umbrella organization of the German Animal Welfare Association and operate an animal shelter or an animal reception station. Citizens also have the option of accommodating their pet in a kennel during a holiday trip or in the event of illness.

The veterinarians of the competent authority regularly and mainly carry out monitoring and investigate complaints and reports of animal welfare violations. They initiate fine proceedings or impose conditions on those responsible in order to remedy grievances.
