The competent authority fulfils the following tasks in the field of matters relating to severely disabled persons:

• Determination of disabilities according to the law on severely disabled persons (SGB IX) including compensation for disadvantages (mark)
• Issuance and renewal of disability passes
• Determination of the conditions for the free transport of severely disabled persons in public passenger transport and/or the exemption/reduction from motor vehicle tax and issue of corresponding supplementary sheets

Severely disabled people can receive certain benefits and assistance, such as free travel on public transport, parking facilities or reduced tax rates.

The responsibility lies with the branch office of the Lower Saxony State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Family responsible for your place of residence.
