Public documents must be used to prove:

• civil status,
• domicile, habitual residence,
• nationality,
• and, if applicable, the last marriages and/or civil partnerships and their dissolution.

• The person must have German citizenship.
• They may not have their domicile or habitual residence in Germany. He or she must never have been in Germany or only temporarily.
• The intended marriage should take place abroad.
• According to German law, there must be no obstacle to the intended marriage.

The issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage is applied for at the responsible registry office I in Berlin. If the examination shows that there is no obstacle to marriage under German law and the necessary information on the person of both parties to the marriage has been provided, the registry office will issue the certificate of no impediment to marriage applied for.

Once issued, the certificate of no impediment to marriage is valid for six months.
