You must apply for the exemption permit and entry in the Register of Craftsmen electronically via the online procedure or in writing to your local Chamber of Crafts. The online application is offered via administrative portals.

Online application:

• Various administrative portals of the federal states provide for online application. The chambers of skilled crafts also offer online access to their administrative procedures.

Written application:

• Go to the website of your local Chamber of Skilled Crafts and download the application forms for the granting of an exemption permit and for entry in the Register of Skilled Crafts. You are also welcome to contact your Chamber of Skilled Crafts directly and have the necessary documents sent to you.
• Complete the forms in full and send them together with the required documents to your local Chamber of Skilled Crafts.
• The procedure for granting an exemption permit involves checking whether the requirements are met, which differ depending on whether recognition of professional experience or training and qualification certificates is being sought. If the requirements are met in the individual case, the exemption permit must be granted. If the training content of professional qualifications differs from that required in Switzerland or if the profession in the country of origin does not include essential activities that are the subject of the profession in Switzerland, participation in an adaptation period or the passing of an aptitude test may be imposed at the applicant's discretion.
• Once the exemption has been granted, you will receive a notification of registration.
• Together with the notification of registration, the company receives the so-called craftsman's card (§ 10 Para. 2 HwO).

You can only practice a craft requiring a license if you are entered in the register of craftsmen. An exemption permit must therefore be applied for in good time.

In Lower Saxony, the legal remedy procedure applies, as there is no longer any provision for a preliminary administrative procedure.
