§Section 58a (2) of Social Code VIII (SGB VIII)

A certificate from the youth welfare office can serve as proof of parental custody

A mother can obtain a certificate stating that she is the holder of parental custody of her child and to what extent. The prerequisite is that the mother is not married to the child's father.The information is issued by the local youth welfare office.A father cannot obtain such a certificate.

Information on the date and place of birth as well as the name of the child at the time of the certification of its birth is required.

It may be necessary to submit proof of the mother's identity (e.g. identity card).

We recommend asking the responsible youth welfare office about the required documents.

The mother can apply for written information from the custody register.

The father of a child cannot apply for information from the custody register.

If the child's parents are married, no written information will be provided from the custody register.

There are no fees.

The processing time depends on the respective workload of the youth welfare office.

If the custody register is not kept at the youth welfare office responsible for the mother's place of residence, a longer processing time is to be expected.
