Do you extract water from a surface water body or from groundwater, or do you extract or discharge groundwater? If so, a fee must be paid to the respective federal state.

In Germany, a water withdrawal charge may be levied for the withdrawal and discharge of water from surface waters, as well as for the withdrawal, pumping, pumping and discharge of groundwater. It is up to the individual federal states to decide whether and to what extent the water withdrawal charge is to be levied.

There is no uniform regulation in the federal states in which the water withdrawal charge is levied.

Any person who withdraws or discharges water from a surface water body or withdraws, brings to the surface, conducts to the surface or discharges groundwater is liable to pay a water withdrawal charge.

There is no uniform procedure among the federal states, as this depends on the specific legal requirements and structures in the individual states.

The processing time depends on the quality and volume of the submitted forms and documents.

A water withdrawal charge can be levied in 13 of 16 federal states for the withdrawal and discharge of water from a surface water body, as well as for the withdrawal, extraction, discharge and discharge of groundwater.

• As a rule, the lower water authorities are responsible for levying the water abstraction charge: districts, independent and large independent cities, Hannover region
• In certain cases the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) is responsible for levying the water abstraction charge
