If a German citizen without a permanent residence in Germany dies abroad, you can have the death subsequently certified at the competent German registry office.

A death that has occurred abroad can also be certified, i.e. entered, in a German death register at your request. The so-called subsequent certification also applies also applies to Germans who died abroad but did not reside in Germany.

With the subsequent certification, an entry is made in a German death register in addition to the certification abroad, i.e. in addition to the entry in the death register of the country in which the death occurred.

You can apply for the subsequent certification under certain conditions at the competent German registry office.

In addition to the information to be included in the death record, you must provide the necessary deeds or other documents that you have.

In particular, the following documents are required:

• Your identity card/passport as the applicant.
• foreign death certificate of the deceased person (if necessary, with translation and certification by the competent foreign authority (apostille) or legalisation by the German mission abroad; it may be sufficient to submit a multilingual form)
• the marriage or civil partnership certificate of the last marriage or civil partnership of the deceased person and, if applicable, proof of its dissolution,
• the birth certificate of the deceased person
• proof of the last place of residence of the deceased person
• for naturalised persons: naturalisation certificate

• the death occurred abroad
• The following are entitled to file an application
  • the parents of a child who died abroad, the child of the deceased person and spouses or civil partners
  • PPersons who can assert a legal interest in the notarisation vis-à-vis the registry office.

You apply for the subsequent certification of a death at the competent German registry office.

• Contact the competent German registry office in writing, by telephone or in person, describe your request and ask for the documents you need to submit.
• Submit the application for subsequent certification and enclose the necessary documents.
• The registry office will check your details and the documents you have submitted and, if necessary, carry out the subsequent certification of the death.
• You have the option of applying for the issue of a German death certificate at the same registry office for a fee.

• Fees are charged by the registry office.
• The subsequent certification is a prerequisite for the issue of a German death certificate.

• Responsible for the AThe registry office in whose area the deceased person had their habitual residence in Germany is responsible for the application.
• If the deceased person did not have a domestic residence, the registry office in whose area you, as the applicant, have your domicile or habitual residence is responsible.
• If none of the aforementioned alternatives apply, you can submit the application at Standesamt I in Berlin.
