The blocking of the electronic proof of identity must be done in person or by telephone. When blocking, the personal data and the lock password must be provided.

If the electronic proof of identity has been activated, the blocking must be initiated by the competent authority in the event of loss or theft of the identity card.

The responsibility lies with the municipality, joint municipality and city in which the residence is located or with the authority that issued the identity card.

Alternatively, the blocking can be done by telephone via the blocking emergency number +49 116 116 (toll-free from the German landline and mobile network; Availability: Monday to Sunday from 0 – 24 o'clock). The amount of the fees from abroad depends on the prices of the respective foreign provider/network operator.
