In many cases, support can also be granted for a period of training abroad - studies or school training (including traineeships).
In order to support a training stay abroad, you must prove the general requirements for BAföG. If you do not receive educational support in Germany due to the economic circumstances of your parents, you can still apply for foreign funding, as different rates apply.
- Proof of income (for the trainee for the approval period, for the parents esp. Tax assessment notice from the penultimate calendar year)
- if applicable, further application documents
- German citizen
- Foreign citizens according to residence status
- Maximum age 29 years, for a Master's degree 34 years. However, exceptions to these age limits apply, for example, to second-chance education trainees or to trainees who raise their own child under the age of ten when they reach the age limit of 30 or 35 years.
- Your performance as a trainee suggests that you will achieve your training goal. However, a special aptitude or talent for the chosen training is not required. It reaches the level of performance that the respective training regulations consider sufficient.
- Proof of a need for support for subsistence and training
The application must be submitted in writing to the competent body. This can also be done informally. However, uniform federal forms must be used for the information required to establish the claim.
Support is granted at the earliest from the beginning of the month in which the training begins, but only after an application has also been submitted.
Due to the more complex processing of applications for funding abroad, it is advisable to submit an application at least six months before the planned stay abroad.
If necessary, the higher funding rates for training abroad can lead to the fact that trainees who are in Germany in particular can be supported. do not receive any support because of the level of income of the parents.
Thus, demonstrably necessary tuition fees are covered for a period of up to one year and up to a maximum limit of 4,600 euros. Supplements for travel to the place of training, health insurance and, if necessary, (depending on the destination country) for higher living costs are also possible.
Depending on the target country, certain central offices for educational support in Germany are responsible for foreign funding under BAföG.
This also applies if you already receive educational support in Germany or only want to complete part of your training or an internship abroad.
Further information and the BAföG International Office responsible for your destination country can be found on the following website:
The competent authority depends on the country in which you would like to complete the training or internship.
The forms are provided by the competent authority and can also be printed out on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
