For property surveys, topographical surveys and many other spatial tasks, it must be possible to determine every position nationwide according to location, height and gravity in a three-dimensional coordinate system.
Global navigation satellite systems, the US GPS, the Russian GLONASS and, in the future, the European GALILEO, can be used to determine positions. To improve accuracy, the surveying administrations of the federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany operate the SAPOS® satellite positioning service as a nationwide joint project. SAPOS® is used to transmit the surveying spatial reference and correction data for positioning.
