The Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act regulates the opening hours of sales outlets, which must be observed.
According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act, stores are permitted to remain open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays. In addition, local authorities have the option of extending store opening hours on up to eight days a year until 6 a.m. on the following day; on Saturdays and on working days before public holidays, this generally only applies until midnight.
In order to guarantee peace and quiet on Sundays and public holidays and to ensure that sales staff can rest at work, sales outlets must generally remain closed on Sundays and public holidays. Municipalities may allow a maximum of four Sundays open for business with store opening hours of up to five hours per year.
Fees are charged for certain services in accordance with the state ordinance on fees in the field of occupational health and safety.
In principle, the municipal administrations of the independent municipalities, the association municipality administrations and the municipal administrations in independent and large district towns are responsible for enforcing the Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act.
