Market activity in the livestock sector is volatile due to fluctuations in supply and demand. In addition, there are a large number of market participants who depend on assured market transparency. This is done on the basis of the Meat Act and its implementing regulations. According to this, slaughterhouses subject to reporting requirements (which have 200 pig, 75 cattle and/or 75 sheep slaughters per week) must report weekly to the competent authority under state law (Supervision and Services Directorate, ADD) on the prices paid and quantities converted.
The monitoring is based on the Meat Act and the implementing regulations issued for it as well as on the Commercial Classes Act with the respective regulations for the individual animal species.
On the basis of the price and quantity reports compiled, the ADD determines the price ranges of the respective commercial classes and, in the case of cattle, by category for the previous week from Monday to Sunday. These are then published together with the average weighted payout price calculated for the respective trading class as an official price determination.
The competent authority under state law is the Supervisory and Service Directorate (ADD) in Trier.
