Do you have a school-age child? Then they will start their education at an elementary school.
Elementary school is the basic level of education common to all children. It introduces pupils to learning at school. It enables them to learn and act independently and together. It encourages the adoption of values, attitudes and behavior. It offers pupils help and orientation and promotes their individual development.
The elementary school bases its educational work on the respective level of development of the pupils. Pupils should learn to fulfill requirements increasingly independently, to set their own tasks, to perform their own work and to take on responsibilities within the scope of their abilities. They should be able to express their opinions freely, but with respect for the convictions and rights of others, and contribute to peaceful coexistence.
When registering, the elementary school collects the following data about your child:
- First name and surname
- Date and place of birth
- gender,
- address,
- telecommunications connection
- Religious affiliation,
- nationality,
- Date of arrival of children not born in Germany,
- Predominant family language,
- Impairments and illnesses, insofar as they are relevant for the school,
- Number of siblings,
- Information about attendance at a kindergarten.
In addition, the surname, first name, address and telecommunication details of the parents and the educational and care representatives are collected. Furthermore, the data required to establish contact in emergencies and, if applicable, information on parental custody.
The elementary school provides for reliable lesson times with lessons spread as evenly as possible over the school mornings. The daily school time should be at least four hours in the morning up to and including grade 2, then five hours. The daily school time is divided into lessons, relaxation periods and play and exercise times.
Pupils in grades 1 to 4 are taught in elementary school. At the end of the grades, they generally advance to the next grade without being promoted. No numerical grades are given in grades 1 and 2; parents receive information on their child's development in the form of verbal reports at the end of the school year and a recorded parent-teacher-child discussion in the middle of the second school year. At the end of the semester of grades three and four, the children receive pure grade reports, which are explained in a recorded parent-teacher-child discussion. At the end of the school year in grades three and four, pupils receive a report combining numerical grades and verbal explanations. By decision of the general conference and in consultation with the school parents' council, the assessment in grade 3 can continue to be exclusively verbal for the first semester or for the entire school year.
The following learning areas and subjects are taught: religion/ethics, German, mathematics, science, music, sport, visual arts/textile design/crafts and integrated foreign language work in English or French. No marks are awarded for foreign language lessons; instead, a portfolio is kept.
Registration for the following school year usually takes place in the third or fourth full week of school after the summer vacation of the current school year.
In addition, most elementary school have childcare facilities that children can attend before and after school.
