Do you want to slaughter a pet or ungulate at home for your own use? Then you must register this with the competent authority.
If you wish to slaughter pets or ungulates yourself at home, you must register this with the competent authority. Home slaughtering refers to the slaughtering of animals outside a commercial slaughterhouse.
The production of meat for other persons is a commercial activity and may only be carried out in compliance with the standards of European and national food hygiene legislation. No statutory hygiene regulations apply to home slaughtering. You decide on the cleanliness of your work yourself.
The following are subject to official ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection for home slaughtering
- Cattle,
- pigs,
- sheep,
- wild game
- goats and other cloven-hoofed animals,
- Horses and other solipeds, provided their meat is intended for human consumption.
The application for home slaughtering must be made in writing and should contain the following information:
- When is the slaughter to take place?
- Which animal will be slaughtered?
- How many animals will be slaughtered?
- The use of meat obtained from domestic slaughter is only permitted for the animal owner's own household.
- Anyone who slaughters animals must have the necessary knowledge and skills to minimize the suffering and pain of the animal to be slaughtered.
- Slaughter may only take place in the owner's own home.
- You register the animals intended for slaughter for an ante-mortem inspection. This is carried out by an official veterinarian, who releases the healthy animal for slaughter.
- You may then carry out the slaughter at home if you have the necessary knowledge.
- After the animal has been slaughtered, the official veterinarian inspects the meat and its organs.
- If there are no abnormalities, the meat is released for further processing.
- In the case of pigs and horses, a Trichinella examination (threadworms) is then carried out before the meat is released for further processing
The ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection is not required for domestic slaughter of rabbits and poultry. However, you should check in advance that the animal does not have any conspicuous physical characteristics before slaughter.
European food law does not apply to private domestic use or to the domestic processing, handling or storage of food for private domestic consumption.
