For larger construction projects, send advance notice to the responsible occupational health and safety authority at least two weeks before the construction site is set up. You must also display this advance notice visibly on the construction site and adjust it in the event of significant changes.

As the client, you or your commissioned third parties must send advance notice to the competent occupational health and safety authority at least two weeks before the construction site is set up, if

• the estimated duration of the work is more than 30 working days and more than 20 workers are scheduled to work on the construction site for a period of at least one work shift at the same time, or
• the scope of the work is expected to exceed 500 person-days, with one person-day comprising a person's work performance over a work shift.

The installation of the construction site begins with the essential preparatory work at the site of the construction project, which is necessary immediately before its implementation, for example, construction of social facilities, installation of supply and disposal facilities, delivery of building materials, machines and equipment.

In addition, you must display the advance notice visibly and legibly on the construction site unaffected by external influences and weather influences.

If you make significant changes, you must update the posted notice. A new transmission to the responsible occupational health and safety authority is not required.

Significant changes that require an adjustment of the advance notice are, for example:

• change of builders or commissioned third parties,
• first appointment of a coordinating person or subsequent change of this person,
• shortening the duration of the construction work, provided that this means increasing the need to work simultaneously or in unplanned shift work,
• first-time action by employees of several employers or use of subcontractors,
• significant increase in the maximum number of simultaneous employees or the number of employers or the number of companies without employees.

If advance notice is required:

• Compile the necessary information.
• Send the advance notice to the competent occupational health and safety authority.
• Display the advance notice on the construction site as soon as the construction site equipment begins.
• In the event of significant changes to the content of the advance notice, check whether you need to adjust the posted advance notice and replace it immediately.

Rule of thumb: Advance notice is usually required if the construction activities require a deployment of at least 4 employees over a period of more than 6 months.

You are acting in an irregular manner if you intentionally or negligently fail to provide the competent authority with necessary advance notice, not correctly, not completely or not in time.
Check whether you need to draw up a safety and health plan (SiGe plan) and a document for later work in addition to the advance notice of the establishment of a construction site.
