In Germany, all burials at sea take place in the coastal seas of the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Burial at sea is the burial of the ashes of the deceased in the sea. Only urns are buried in the open sea. Burial at sea is therefore only possible if the deceased has been cremated beforehand. Burial at sea in surface waters within the meaning of the Water Resources Act is not permitted.

The will of the deceased shall be decisive for the place, type and execution of the burial, unless statutory provisions or compelling public interests dictate otherwise. A burial requires the written approval of the local regulatory authority of the place of burial.
