The issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage for marriage abroad is also possible in Germany for stateless persons, homeless foreigners, persons entitled to asylum and recognised refugees with habitual residence in Germany.

• The requirements, type and format of the evidence to be provided and the examination of the marriage requirements are governed by German law, as in the case of persons with German citizenship.
• Authentic instruments must prove:
  • civil status,
  • domicile or habitual residence,
  • nationality
  • and, if applicable, the last marriage and its dissolution or the establishment and dissolution of the last civil partnership.

The certificate of no impediment to marriage, which a foreigner with habitual residence in Germany requires in order to marry abroad, will be issued to persons with German personal status upon request.

These are:

• Stateless person
• homeless foreigners,
• persons entitled to asylum and
• recognized refugees.

• Costs may be incurred for the issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage. Please contact your registry office.

• The issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage is applied for at the competent registry office.

• If there is no impediment to marriage under German law to the intended marriage and the necessary information on both spouses has been provided, the registry office issues the requested certificate of no impediment to marriage.

• Depending on the individual case

After issue, the certificate of no impediment to marriage is valid for a period of six months.

• Issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage for stateless persons, homeless foreigners, persons entitled to asylum and recognised refugees with habitual residence in Germany.
