The prerequisite for determining the election result is the determination of the lower levels (municipality, district, city, state).
The result of the European election is determined as follows:
- As soon as the election result in the constituency has been determined, the returning officer reports it to the district or municipal returning officer. If a municipality belonging to a district is divided into several polling districts, the electoral officer reports the election result of his or her polling district to the municipal authority, which summarizes the election results of all polling districts in the municipality and reports them to the district returning officer.
- The district returning officer determines the provisional election result in the district based on the quick reports.
- The city returning officer determines the provisional election result in the independent city based on the quick reports.
- The district and city returning officers inform the Land returning officer of the provisional election results as quickly as possible, taking into account the results of the postal vote.
- The Land returning officer reports the incoming district and city election results to the Federal Returning Officer immediately and on an ongoing basis.
- The Federal Returning Officer determines the provisional election result in the electoral area on the basis of the rapid reports from the Land returning officers.
- After reporting by the Federal Returning Officer, the Federal Electoral Committee determines the overall result of the election. It determines the total number of votes cast for the individual nominations, the number of seats allocated to the individual nominations and which candidates have been elected.
