Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Appendix II)
Your grazing or enclosure animal was probably injured or killed by a lynx or wolf? Then report this within 24 hours to receive compensation if the conditions are met.
Lynx and wolves are strictly protected throughout Europe. The current natural recolonization of Rhineland-Palatinate by wolves is being supported by the state government with funding measures. The same applies to the lynx - here the recolonization is actively supported by a reintroduction project in the Palatinate Forest.
Both species live almost exclusively on wild animals such as deer and wild boar. However, it cannot be ruled out that they may also prey on farm animals such as sheep or goats on pasture or fallow deer in enclosures, especially if these are not adequately protected by fences or livestock guarding dogs.
If you are affected by this, you can apply for compensation under certain conditions.
The prerequisite for crack compensation is a crack report by the KLUWO. In designated prevention areas and buffer zones to prevention areas, adequate herd protection using (electric) fences and/or livestock guarding dogs is also a prerequisite for compensation.
Westerwald prevention area: Altenkirchen, Westerwald and Neuwied districts as well as the city of Koblenz and parts of the Mayen-Koblenz and Rhine-Lahn districts.
Eifel buffer zone: municipalities of Adenau, Gerolstein, Prüm
Characteristics for determining cracks caused by animals can be found below:
Please report the livestock crack to the hotline or by e-mail to the responsible office. An on-site inspection will then be carried out and a crack report drawn up. This is free of charge for you. For this it is important that the killed farm animal has not yet been disposed of. Leave the killed animal in place and secure it with a tarpaulin to protect it from scavengers. Do not allow dogs near it and cordon off the area.
If an attack by a wolf or lynx cannot be ruled out, you can submit an application for financial compensation to the competent authority.
The report of the torn farm animal should be made within 24 hours via the general hotline (06306-911199).
Measures for prevention and compensation for damage caused by wolves
Compensation is paid by the state for grazing animals or livestock that have been killed by a lynx or wolf.
In prevention areas, compensation is limited or does not apply if there was insufficient protection by fences or livestock guarding dogs.
To apply for compensation, the first step is to notify the competent authority quickly (24 hours).
Please contact the Lynx and Wolf Coordination Center (KLUWO) to apply for compensation.
