With the custody certificate, parents can prove that they have sole custody of their children. If parents who are not married to each other have made a joint declaration of custody (certificate), this is recorded in the custody register of the birth youth welfare office. It is also entered there if parents have been granted joint custody in whole or in part on the basis of a court decision. Sole custody can be proven by a so-called negative certificate from the custody register. This confirms that there are no entries in the custody register. Information from the custody register or the required certificate can be obtained from the youth welfare office responsible for the child's place of residence.

Information on the date and place of birth as well as the child's name at the time of birth certification is required.
