If you are a specialist dentist from the EU/EEA/Switzerland in Germany and want to work here, you need recognition of your continuing education qualifications.
If you have a foreign specialist dental title from another EU/EEA or Switzerland country and want to work as a specialist dentist in Germany, you need recognition of your specialist dental qualification by the responsible dental association. Only then may this specialist dental designation be used in Germany.
- Informal application for recognition of a specialist dental qualification
- Declaration of whether and to which State Dental Association an application for recognition has already been submitted
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- German licence to practise medicine or professional licence
- Certificate of completion of the general dental year
- Proof of training acquired abroad (diplomas, specialist dentist designations)
- Translated and certified copy of the relevant study or examination regulations in force at the time of obtaining the qualification
- Proof of relevant professional experience (detailed certificates, bills of records) and other evidence of formal qualifications, if necessary to establish equivalence.
- Certificate of entitlement to practise in the country of training
- If applicable, declaration of conformity in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC
- If applicable, a decision on the determination of equivalence
The documents must be submitted in the form of originals or certified copies in German or as a certified copy of a German translation. Translations must be carried out by interpreters or translators who are publicly appointed or sworn. Translations must be made from the original or from certified copies. This must be certified by the translator.
The recognition of your specialist dental qualification and the work as a specialist dentist are only possible if you already have a valid licence to practise medicine in Germany. This means that you must first have applied for your qualification as a dentist at the competent authority and received the approbation/professional permit (information at: https://lsjv.rlp.de/de/unsere-Aufgaben/arbeit/akademische-heilberufe/approbationen-und-berufserlaubnisse/). After that, you can apply for recognition of your specialist dental qualification.
You must prove your German language skills when granting your licence to practise medicine/professional licence. Your German language skills will not be checked again for the recognition of specialist dentists.
Fees may be charged for recognition, please contact the competent authority.
For the procurement of necessary documents, additional costs may be incurred by other agencies.
You must submit the application for recognition of your specialist dental qualification in writing, otherwise informally, to the Rhineland-Palatinate State Dental Association.
If, as a national of a Member State of the European Union, the European Economic Area or a Contracting State, you hold evidence of formal qualifications for specialist dental training, the qualification will be automatically recognised in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications and you will be entitled to use a corresponding title upon request.
The evidence of formal qualifications to be mutually recognised (specialist dental titles) can be found in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC.
The procedure for examining an application for admission to a regulated profession must be completed as soon as possible, but no later than three months after the submission of the complete dossier.
The time limit may be extended once if justified by the specifics of the matter. The deadline extension is a maximum of one month if you have obtained your training certificate in a member state of the EU or a state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in a country treated as such by agreement.
There are no deadlines to be observed. Within one month of submitting the application, the responsible dental association will inform you if any documents are missing.
