A non-medical practitioner is a person who practices medicine professionally without being licensed as a doctor. The practice of medicine is any professional or commercial activity to diagnose, cure or alleviate illness, suffering or physical injury in humans, even if it is carried out in the service of others. If you wish to work as a non-medical practitioner for the practice of medicine, you require a license.
You will need the following documents to register for the alternative practitioner examination:
- Informal application (if already known, stating the intended future place of establishment)
- Birth certificate
- Presentation of the federal identity card (certified copy)
- Last school leaving certificate (certified copy)
- Police clearance certificate of document type O not older than 3 months at the time of application (for submission to authorities)
- Curriculum vitae
- Confirmation of registration from the responsible registration office ! Registration certificate of the 1st place of residence, which must not be older than 3 months
- Proof of any previous training as a non-medical practitioner
- Medical certificate of health, which must not be older than 3 months at the time of application and which confirms physical and mental aptitude (family doctor or public health officer)
- You must have reached the age of 25,
- be medically fit to practise the profession,
- and you must prove to the health authority, when your knowledge and skills are tested, that practicing medicine does not pose a risk to human health.
The license entitles you to use the professional title "Heilpraktikerin" or "Heilpraktiker".
- Written and oral knowledge examination of candidates for alternative practitioners - also in a limited form - as well as examination according to the First Implementing Ordinance to the Alternative Practitioners Act of February 18, 1939 (RGBl. I p. 259) in the currently valid version: 365.00 euros
- Written knowledge test for candidates for alternative practitioners - also in a restricted form - in accordance with the First Implementing Ordinance to the Alternative Practitioners Act: 150.00 euros
- Oral knowledge examination of candidates for alternative practitioners - also in a restricted form - in accordance with the First Implementing Ordinance to the Alternative Practitioners Act: 215.00 euros
- Examination of knowledge on file of candidates for alternative practitioners - also in a restricted form - in accordance with the First Implementing Ordinance to the Alternative Practitioners Act: 50.00 to 150.00 euros
- Postponement of a scheduled written or oral knowledge examination date at the request - medical certificate - of the candidate alternative practitioner: 25.00 euros
- Granting of a license to practice as a non-medical practitioner (non-medical practitioner license) - also in restricted form: 140.00 euros
- Withdrawal or revocation of a non-medical practitioner's license: according to time spent
The knowledge checks take place on fixed examination dates. The 3rd Wednesday in March and the 2nd Wednesday in October with the first, written part of the examination. Approximately 2 weeks later, the oral examinations begin for those who have passed the written part. The application deadline is December 31 for the March exam and June 30 for the October exam (documents must be received in Mainz!).

The application for admission as a non-medical practitioner must be submitted to the public order office of the district or city administration responsible for you (lower administrative authority). They will forward the application to the competent state-wide inspection authority, the Mainz-Bingen district administration, Department of Healthcare. This department is also the point of contact for all questions regarding the implementation of the inspections (e.g. making appointments).
