Ausbildungsförderung Bewilligung für den Besuch einer im Ausland gelegenen Ausbildungsstätte

In many cases, training assistance can also be granted for attending school, studying or doing an internship abroad.

You can receive educational support if you are a pupil or student and cannot otherwise raise the necessary funds for your living expenses and education.

• Formal application
• School certificate, certificate of enrollment or proof of internship
• Proof of income from parents and, if applicable, spouse or partner
• Tax assessment notice from the calendar year before last /
  if no tax assessment notice is available:
  • Printout of the electronic income tax statement
  • If applicable, certificate from the responsible tax office on the tax-free annual amount from the calendar year before last

The responsible office will inform you if further documents are required.

• German citizen
• Foreign citizen depending on residence status
• Permanent residence in Germany
• maximum 29 or 34 years old, exceptions permitted
• the duration of the training abroad is at least three months
• Your own income and assets as well as the income of your parents and, if applicable, your spouse or registered partner are not sufficient to finance your education abroad

There are no fees.

You will receive BAföG from the beginning of the month in which you start your studies at the earliest, but only once you have submitted an application. You should therefore submit your first application immediately after you have been accepted by the foreign school or admitted to study abroad. Educational support is usually granted for the duration of your education abroad, but for a maximum period of twelve months. After that, you must submit an application for further funding.

Due to the more time-consuming processing of applications for funding abroad, it is advisable to submit your application at least six months before your planned stay abroad.

If you are not eligible for financial support in Germany due to your parents' financial circumstances, you can still apply for financial support abroad, as supplements for tuition fees, travel expenses and health insurance are paid for education abroad within the European Union or Switzerland. For education abroad outside the European Union and Switzerland, an additional monthly foreign allowance may be granted to compensate for differences in purchasing power.

The responsibility for both pupils and students lies with the central international offices for educational support (which vary depending on the destination country).
This also applies if you are already receiving educational support in Germany or only want to complete part of your education or an internship abroad.
You can find further information and the office responsible for your destination country on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Rhineland-Palatinate offers you the option of completing your application online. All you have to do is print out the forms, sign them and then send them to the relevant office. After completing the application forms, you will receive an overview of the additional documents you need to submit. If any additional documents are missing, you will be asked for them by the responsible office.
