Foreign nationals from non-EU and non-EEA countries can obtain a residence permit for training purposes if the Federal Employment Agency has given its approval.

- Your livelihood is secured (the assessment limit is the maximum funding rate according to the Federal Training Assistance Act - BAföG).

- You fulfill the admission requirements for the relevant training course.
For the issue of a residence permit
- with a period of validity of up to one year € 100,
- with a validity period of more than one year € 110

- for a further stay of up to three months € 65
- 80 for a further stay of more than three months.
You would like to complete part of your training here and have already received a residence permit for training purposes in another EU member state: In most cases, you will also receive a residence permit for Germany.
You have a residence permit for other purposes (e.g. for family reasons) or a settlement permit: In this case, you can take up training in Germany without an additional residence permit.
If you complete qualified vocational training in Germany, you are allowed to work up to ten hours a week, regardless of the training. After successfully completing the qualified vocational training, the authorities can extend your residence permit by up to one year under certain conditions. During this time
- you can look for a job appropriate to your qualification, provided it can be filled by foreign nationals, and
- may work without restriction.
Before entering Germany, you may need to apply for a national visa in your home country.
After entering Germany, you must apply for a residence permit in writing to the foreigners authority before your visa expires. Depending on where you live, the foreigners authority is the district administration or the municipal administration of the independent city.
Citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and the United States of America can enter Germany without a visa, regardless of the purpose and duration of their stay. They must apply for a residence permit within three months of entering Germany at the immigration authority responsible for their place of residence.
