The Thuringian Community School (TGS) enriches the Thuringian school system with another type of school. It stands on an equal footing with the elementary school, the regular school and the high school. At the community school, all students learn together at least up to grade 8. Depending on the desired degree and the child's level of achievement, degree-related learning takes place from grade 9 onward, since at the Thuringian community school every general school-leaving qualification (lower secondary school leaving certificate, qualifying lower secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate secondary school leaving certificate, school-based part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification, as well as the general university entrance qualification) can be achieved. Learning is planned individually for all students to ensure the best conditions for academic success. In this way, the Thuringian Community School takes up current educational science findings.

The structure of the Thuringian Community School:

Class levels Thuringian School Law § 4

"(4) The community school comprises grades 1 to 12 [...] The school type community school covers the offer of the school type elementary school or the school type regular school.

(5) Notwithstanding subsection (4), the community school may cover grades 1 to 10. In this case, the offer for the acquisition of the general higher education entrance qualification must be ensured through cooperation with a grammar school.

(6) For a transitional period of up to ten years from the date of establishment or change of school type, the community school may initially begin with grade level 5; in that case, the offer required for grades 1 to 4 must be ensured by an elementary school."

Flexible school entry phase Grades 1 and 2 can be completed in one to three years of school attendance, depending on the child's stage of development. This gives children the time they really need for their development.

Individual gradu ation phase The graduation phase is also tailored to the individual student. For example, grade 9 of the part of the regular school and the community school that relates to the lower secondary school leaving certificate can be completed in one school year or - at the request of the parents - in two. This means that teaching is increasingly individualized and practice-oriented.

Transfer decisions At the community school, there is no transfer decision until grade 8.

Verbal performance assessments supplement grades In the future, performance will be assessed with grades in all types of schools and will also be assessed verbally. The verbal performance assessment takes the form of comments on learning development, on the basis of which individual support measures can be determined. The coexistence of verbal performance assessment and grades enables students to better identify with the performance assessment and thus arrive at a real self-assessment. Teachers are given the opportunity for more differentiation in assessment. At the community school, there is also the option of dispensing with grades altogether in certain grades. This requires a decision by the school conference.
