If you want to conduct animal experiments, then you need prior approval from the competent authority.

Anyone wishing to carry out experiments (interventions and treatments for scientific purposes) on vertebrates or cephalopods requires approval of the experimental project by the competent authority.

Requirements

• The experiment is essential.
• The responsible head of the experimental project and his deputy have the necessary professional qualification.
• The necessary facilities, equipment and other material resources are available.
• The personnel and organizational requirements are met.
• The accommodation, care, supervision of the animals and medical care in accordance with the legal requirements are ensured.

The permit is granted for a limited period.

The application must contain all information according to § 8 para. 1 Animal Protection Act.

The approval is subject to a fee. The fees are determined in accordance with the applicable Thuringian administrative cost regulations for the business area of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Family and Health in conjunction with the administrative cost schedule issued for this purpose. Part C No. 3 (and the ThürAllgVwKostO).

There are no deadlines for submitting an application. The statutory processing period for the authority is 40 working days after complete submission of all documents. It is imperative that the applicant allows sufficient time for processing by the competent authority.

Animal experiments may be exempt from the approval requirement if, for example, they are prescribed or provided for by law or ordered by the authorities. These must be notified to the competent authority at least 20 working days prior to commencement.
Anyone wishing to conduct animal experiments must appoint an animal welfare officer and notify the competent authority of this with the application.

Applications requiring approval must be submitted by the competent authority to a commission appointed by the TMASGFF before approval.
