Do you or your employees slaughter, stun or bleed animals commercially? If so, you must appoint a responsible person with authority to issue instructions for reasons of animal welfare.
If you
- slaughter an average of at least 50 livestock units per week as the operator of a slaughter facility or as a tradesperson, or
- provide workers who feed, stun or bleed slaughter animals,
you must name a person responsible for compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act who is authorized to issue instructions to the competent authority.
In individual cases, operators of the following animal husbandries, facilities and operations may also be required to designate a responsible person authorized to issue instructions:
- Livestock operations including horse operations,
- facilities in which
- animal experiments are carried out,
- Interventions or treatments performed on animals for the purpose of education, training or continuing education,
- Interventions or treatments are performed on vertebrate animals for the production, extraction, storage or reproduction of substances, products or organisms,
- the removal, in whole or in part, of organs or tissues from vertebrate animals for the purpose of transplantation or culture or the examination of isolated organs, tissues or cells, or
- vertebrate animals are killed for scientific purposes Are killed,
- establishments and undertakings,
- that transport animals for commercial purposes,
- where animals are fed, cared for, or housed during transport,
- Circus operations that are not operated on a commercial basis.
