The documents can be sent to the competent authority without any specific formal requirements.

Note: Foreign language documents must be accompanied by a German translation. The translation must be done by an officially sworn document interpreter. Diplomas, certificates of veterinary education must be submitted in a certified translation.

If you are a national of

• of a member state of the EU,
• of another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, or
• of a contracting state to which the EU member states have granted a corresponding legal entitlement by treaty

and if you have acquired your training certificate in one of these states, you must demonstrate with the application that, with regard to the intended veterinary activity, there is a special interest in the granting of a permit instead of the granting of an Approbation.

Documents issued in a member state of the European Union or in another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area may also be submitted electronically by EU nationals. In the event of reasonable doubt as to the authenticity of the documents submitted and insofar as absolutely necessary, the licensing authority may also require the submission of certified copies in this case.

In order to obtain a permit for temporary practice of the veterinary profession,

• you must prove that you have completed training for the veterinary profession
• you must not be guilty of any conduct that would render you unworthy or unreliable to practice as a veterinarian
• you must not be unfit in health for the practice of the veterinary profession
• you must have the necessary knowledge of German for the job at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and
• you must have proof of a specific job.

A fee range of 60 to 120 EUR is set for the granting of a permit for the temporary practice of the veterinary profession and a fee range of 30 to 100 EUR for the extension of the permit.

Additional costs may arise (e.g. for translations or certifications). These costs vary individually.

• For a permit to temporarily practice the veterinary profession, you must submit an application in writing or electronically to the competent body of the federal state in which the veterinary profession is to be practiced.
• The competent body will decide on the permit after reviewing your documents.

A decision on the application will be taken within three months of submission of the complete documentation. The deadline may be extended by one month.

The application must be submitted before you start working as a veterinarian.

If the applicant cannot be granted a license or permission to temporarily practice as a veterinarian, the competent authority will examine whether the practice of certain veterinary activities can be approved under the conditions of § 15b of the Federal Veterinary Medical Regulations. Veterinary activity prior to the granting of permission for the temporary practice of the veterinary profession may result in criminal penalties. lead.

All veterinarians who practice their profession in Thuringia or, if they do not practice their profession, have their habitual residence there, are members of the State Veterinary Chamber of Thuringia (with the exception of veterinarians working in the supervisory authority and veterinarians who practice the profession only temporarily and occasionally in the context of service provision under European law). Each member of the Chamber must register with the State Veterinary Chamber and the competent Veterinary and Food Control Office within one month of commencing professional activity.

The permit is revocable and in principle only granted or extended up to a total duration of the veterinary activity in a non-independent position of a maximum of four years. As a rule, it is limited to a specific employment position and does not entitle the holder to perform sovereign tasks.
