• Thuringian Burial Act (ThürBestG)

Deceased persons are to be buried in accordance with Section 17 (1) of the Thuringian Burial Act (ThürBestG). Burial is possible in the ground or cremation with subsequent burial of the ashes (§ 19 para. 1 ThürBestG).

In principle, there is a cemetery obligation (§ 23 ThürBestG). An urn with the ashes can also be buried from a ship on the high seas. Burial and interment can take place both in the cemetery of the home municipality and in a cemetery of one's own choice, if its owner permits it.

Before the burial in the ground or the interment of urns, a death certificate issued by the registry office of the place of death must be submitted to the institution of the cemetery. An explicit authorization to carry out a burial is not required.

The fees for burial in the ground or the respective urn burial are to be inquired at the respective carrier of the cemetery or the funeral home (e.g. burial on the high seas).

In the case of cremation, there are additional fees for the second post-mortem examination and cremation at the crematorium.

As a rule, burial may take place no earlier than two days after the occurrence of death. Burial in the ground or cremation shall be made within ten days after the occurrence of death. Urns shall be interred within 6 months.
