To be able to be appointed and work as a dangerous goods safety advisor, you must have a training certificate. The training certificate is issued to you by the IHK after participation in a training course and a successful examination.

As soon as a company is involved in the transport of dangerous goods, a dangerous goods officer must be appointed. The dangerous goods officer's training certificate must correspond to the mode of transport on which the company transports dangerous goods.

There are training courses and examinations for

• Road transport,
• rail transport,
• inland waterway transport and
• maritime transport

You can take the exam as an initial exam, supplemental exam, and retest. For the initial exam, you must provide proof of at least 22.5 hours of training for the mode of transportation being tested. If you already have a certificate but want to extend it to an additional mode of transport, you take the so-called supplementary examination. For this you have to prove a training of 7.5 hours for the additional mode of transport. This exam can be repeated once (without a new training course). Only then does the IHK issue the training certificate for a period of 5 years. The examination can be taken for one or simultaneously for a maximum of three modes of transport.

Please note the following points for the examination:

• The duration of the examination depends on the number of modes of transport examined. It is between 100 (one mode of transport) and 250 minutes (maximum four modes of transport) for the basic examination and between 50 and a maximum of 125 minutes for the supplementary examination. The duration of the supplementary examination is between 50 (one mode of transport) and 150 minutes (maximum three modes of transport).
• The examination is conducted in writing. You may use the relevant regulatory texts for the respective modes of transport as well as a non-programmable calculator as aids. The use of other electronic aids is not permitted.

If you have a training certificate that is about to expire, you can take a renewal exam. To do so, you must present your training certificate. If you pass the renewal exam within 12 months before the expiration date of the training certificate, the training certificate will be extended for another 5 years from the expiration date. There are no restrictions on retaking the renewal exam within the validity period of the training certificate.

You can take the examination at any IHK in Germany, regardless of the training center and your place of residence.

For basic, supplementary and repeat examinations:

• Copy of the course confirmation from the training provider, the original must be presented to the IHK on the day of the examination.

For supplementary and renewal examinations:

• copy of the current training certificate for dangerous goods safety advisers, the original must be presented to the IHK on the day of the examination

Basic examination

• Completed training at a recognized training organizer for the respective mode of transport of at least 22.5 hours

Supplementary examination

• Valid training certificate
• Proof of supplementary training course of at least 7.5 hours for the mode of transport to be tested

Renewal examination

• Not yet expired training certificate for the respective mode of transport

A fee is charged for taking the examination including the issuance of the training certificate. The examination fee is based on the applicable fee schedule of the IHK at which you are taking the examination.

First, you complete a training course for the desired mode(s) of transport with a private provider.

• After attending the training, you register online or in writing for the examination at an IHK.
• The IHK confirms your exam registration after reviewing your documents.
• You take the exam on site at the IHK.
• You will have passed the examination if you have achieved at least 50% of the maximum number of points specified in the relevant examination questionnaire.

After successful completion of the examination, you will be issued with a certificate of training as a dangerous goods safety advisor and can start working as a dangerous goods safety advisor.

As a rule, you will receive your pass or fail notification approximately 2 weeks after taking the exam.

The training certificate is valid for five years from the date of passing the basic examination.

The training certificate is valid for a period of 5 years. To extend the training certificate, a renewal test must be passed before the validity expires.
