To transport dangerous goods by road, you must have an ADR training certificate.

Dangerous goods can only be transported by road under certain conditions. The transport of dangerous goods is regulated by the Dangerous Goods Ordinance for Road, Rail and Inland Navigation (GGVSEB) and the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (abbreviation ADR, French for Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route).

The driver of the vehicle must be in possession of an ADR certificate (ADR card). The examination is conducted by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and is taken in writing. A prerequisite for the examination is the complete participation in a training course recognized by the IHK.

To do this, you must first attend a training course at a recognized course organizer. You must then pass an examination at the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

The examination for dangerous goods drivers is usually held by the locally responsible IHK at the training organizer's premises following the relevant training. The training courses and thus also the examinations are divided into basic course, advanced course tank, advanced course class 1, advanced course class 7 and refresher training. Each training course ends with an examination.

The duration of the examination is for:

  • Refresher training 30 minutes

Admission to the examination for an advanced course can only be granted if the participant has previously passed the examination for the basic course. The ADR certificate (ADR card) has a validity of 5 years related to the date of examination in the basic course. ADR certificates (ADR Card) are extended by 5 years from the old validity if the training course with examination was successfully completed within one year before the expiry of the ADR certificate (ADR Card). The extension then takes place from the expiration date.

If the advanced training is before this date, then the new validity is calculated from the date of the advanced training examination. The advanced training course with examination must necessarily take place within the period of validity of the ADR certificate (ADR card), because otherwise initial training and examination must be completed again.

• You will only be admitted to the respective examination if you have attended the corresponding training course recognized by the IHK without any absences.
• You will only be admitted to the examination for an advanced course if you have passed the examination for the basic course in addition to attending a recognized training course.
• You will only be admitted to the refresher exam, if you present a valid ADR training certificate in addition to participation in a recognized training course.

A fee is required for participation in the examination including the issue of the ADR certificate (ADR card). It will be collected by the course organizer together with the course fee.

First, you attend a training course of at least 2.5 days at a recognized organizer.

• As a rule, the training organizer will register you for the examination at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). If not, register online or in writing with the IHK.
• The IHK will conduct the examination. This usually takes place directly after the training course at the organizer's premises.
• The examination is passed if the number of errors indicated on the examination sheet has not been exceeded.

After passing the exam, the IHK will issue you with the ADR training certificate and you can start working.

As a rule, you will receive your pass or fail notification approximately 2 weeks after taking the exam.

There are no deadlines to be observed.

In the case of a failed examination, the IHK allows a one-time repetition of the examination in the district of the IHK without further training upon written application after a reasonable period of time. In the case of a failed training examination, repeat examinations are only possible within the period of validity of the ADR certificate (ADR card).
