If you have a disability and meet the legal requirements, you can apply for recognition of severe disability. The degree of disability will also be determined.
If you have a health disorder or illness lasting longer than 6 months and would like to have this recognized as a disability, you can apply for this.
If the examination of the required documents shows a degree of disability of 50 or more, you can be issued a severely disabled person's card.
In addition to the degree of disability, special health restrictions may be determined in the course of the examination. If necessary, the corresponding marks will be entered on the severely disabled person's ID card.
The following marks can be recognized by the competent authority and entitle you to further compensation for disadvantages:
- G - considerable impairment of mobility in road traffic,
- aG - exceptional walking disability,
- H - helplessness,
- B - entitlement to a permanent escort when using public transport,
- RF - radio licence fee reduction and/or telephone connection fee reduction,
- GL - deafness,
- BL - blindness,
- TBL - deaf-blindness.

- if available: Determination of the degree of disability, the pension notice or a corresponding administrative or court decision (for example, notice from a professional association or a pension office or another determination authority)
- a recent passport photo
- if possible: medical documents (e.g. expert opinion); medical documents are otherwise requested by the responsible office from physicians, hospitals, etc.
- in case of representation: power of attorney or identity card of the person taking care of the applicant
- for applicants without citizenship of an EU member state: proof of legal residence
- Your health has been impaired for more than six months in such a way that it makes it difficult or impossible for you to participate in social life.
- Your health impairments are documented by medical records.
- The determination of disability is made upon application.
- The application can initially be made informally.
- If you have made the application informally at first, you must fill in and submit the form of the responsible office subsequently.
- After you have submitted your application, the documents you have submitted, if any, will be reviewed.
- If necessary, the competent office will request further documents independently in order to clarify the medical facts.
- All documents then available will be reviewed again.
- After your documents have been checked, you will receive a decision from the responsible office, which may determine a degree of disability for you, as well as any characteristic signs.
- If you have been diagnosed with a severe disability, you can receive tax benefits.
- If you meet certain health requirements, you will be awarded special marks that entitle you to disadvantage compensation, such as free public transport, free transport for an accompanying person, a reduction in or exemption from motor vehicle tax, parking facilities and exemption from the obligation to pay radio and television licence fees.
