Schulen in freier Trägerschaft

Independent schools enrich and complement the school system in Thuringia. They are subject to state supervision.

They are divided into substitute schools and supplementary schools.

• Substitute schools offer instruction like public schools (e.g. private elementary schools, private high schools) and thus replace public educational offerings with private ones.
• Supplementary schools are all independent schools that are not substitute schools. They offer a range of courses that does not exist in the public school system. They complement the public educational offer through their educational programs.

Alternative schools:

Substitute schools as well as new educational programs at existing substitute schools must be approved by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The school authorities receive financial assistance for the costs of teaching staff and school expenses, as well as for construction measures, if certain conditions are met. School supervision, which is limited to compliance with the approval and recognition requirements, is the responsibility of the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

Supplementary schools:

The Thuringian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports must be notified of the establishment of a supplementary school. The educational programs developed and implemented by supplementary schools are mainly in the area of vocational education. However, there are also supplementary schools that prepare students for foreign educational qualifications.
