Animal welfare refers to the protection of both wild animals and those living in human care.

Animal welfare means the individual protection of every animal, regardless of whether it is wild or kept in human care. It is primarily a matter of keeping animals in a manner appropriate to their species, protecting them during transport and during slaughter.

An important pillar of animal protection is the voluntary animal protection work. In particular, the animal protection associations are to be mentioned here. The majority of animal welfare associations belong to the umbrella organization of the German Animal Welfare Association and operate an animal shelter or an animal reception center. Citizens also have the option of placing their animal in a boarding kennel during a vacation trip or in case of illness.

The official veterinarians carry out regular and focused monitoring and follow up on complaints and reports of violations of animal protection law. They initiate proceedings to impose fines or impose conditions on those responsible in order to eliminate abuses.
