As the owner of a dog, you are obliged to notify the municipality, administrative community or fulfilling municipality in which you reside of the keeping of your dog. The notification must be made immediately after the dog has been kept.
Please note that you must have the dog permanently and unmistakably marked with a forgery-proof electronically readable transponder according to the ISO standard (microchip) by a veterinarian at your own expense. The chipping must have taken place within three months from the beginning of the keeping. For puppies, this period begins at the earliest when the dog reaches the age of three months.
In addition, you are required to take out liability insurance to cover personal injury and property damage caused by the animal, with a minimum sum insured of 500,000 euros for personal injury and 250,000 euros for other damage.
The notification of keeping the dog shall contain the following information:
- Surname, first name of the dog owner
- Date of birth of the dog owner
- Address of the dog owner
- beginning of keeping the dog (date)
- transponder number of the dog (if the dog is already chipped)
- sex of the dog
- Date of birth/litter date of the dog (if known)
- breed (or crossbreed) of the dog
- Description of the dog's appearance
- for example coat color, instep height, special characteristics
If your dog was chipped after April 25, 2020, you must provide proof of your dog's data by means of a certificate from the veterinarian performing the identification or the so-called pet passport,
Please also bring proof of conclusion of a dog liability insurance to the registration.

The owner of a dog shall be deemed to have committed an administrative offense if he fails to comply with the obligation to notify the competent authority, fails to have the dog marked or fails to take out and maintain liability insurance in the appropriate amount.
Administrative offenses can be punished with a fine of up to ten thousand euros.

- Failure to notify the authorities of dog ownership or failure to electronically identify the dog, as well as violation of the obligation to insure as a dog owner, may be punished by a fine of up to ten thousand euros.
- The local authority responsible for the notification of ownership is the municipality, administrative community or fulfilling municipality in which the owner of the dog resides.
