If you wish to have a replacement driver's license issued, then you must apply for it at the appropriate authority.

If your driver's license has been lost (stolen, illegible, or lost), you may be issued a replacement driver's license upon request, provided you do not relinquish your license.

If your name has changed, you do not have to get a new driver's license. However, especially when driving abroad, it may be useful to be in possession of an EU card driver's license with current information. If you wish to change your name on your driver's license, a new card driver's license will be issued upon request.

In case of name change:

• Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card or passport),
• if applicable, certificate of registration,
• previous driving license (it is the task of the driving license authority to make sure that the applicant is in possession of the driving license by obtaining information from the registers).
• a biometric photograph in accordance with the Passport Ordinance,
• in case of change of name due to marriage: additionally a certified copy of the marriage certificate, if the name has not yet been changed in the identity card or passport,
• in the case of a name change due to divorce: additional name change certificate from the registry office, if the name has not yet been changed in the identity card or passport.

In case of theft, loss, illegibility:

• Current photograph (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal). Information and examples can be found in the photo sample board (Bundesdruckerei).
• if necessary, submission of an affirmation in lieu of an oath about the whereabouts of the driver's license
• official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card or passport)
• If applicable, current certificate of registration
• If applicable, theft report from the police

You must be the holder of a valid driver's license.

The issuance of a card driver's license or the exchange for one is subject to a fee. Information on the amount of fees and costs can be obtained from the responsible driving license authority, which sets them in accordance with the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt). The amount of the fees depends on the administrative costs. The costs for sending the card driver's license, its express order or other expenses are not included in the fees, but are also to be borne by the applicants.

• You can apply for a change of name on your driver's license in writing or in electronic form at the driver's license office in your place of residence.
• The loss of a driver's license must be reported immediately.

The duration of the processing of the application for a card driving license depends on the circumstances of each individual case. The new card driver's license is produced centrally by Bundesdruckerei GmbH in Berlin. To receive the new driver's license, you can request that the card driver's license be sent to you. The direct dispatch is carried out by Bundesdruckerei GmbH.

Or you can have the completed card driver's license picked up in person or - after presenting a power of attorney - by a representative at the driver's license office.

It is also possible to apply for the driver's license by express delivery. The new driver's license will then be ready at the driver's license office within a few days.

There are no deadlines to be observed.

The issuance of a new driver's license is not mandatory in the event of a change of name. Nevertheless, it is recommended to have a new driver's license issued in such a case.

Anyone who does not immediately report the loss of a driver's license and apply for a replacement document commits an administrative offense.
