In Germany, farriery and hoof trimming may only be practised by certified and state-approved farriers. This does not apply to the practice of farriery by employees or apprentices who are subject to social insurance contributions, insofar as they work under the supervision of farriers. This also excludes veterinary work and work that merely involves the usual day-to-day cleaning and care of hooves and claws.
Farriery includes all work on a hoof for the purpose of protection, health maintenance, correction or treatment. Hoof trimming includes all the work involved in fitting, repairing or removing a shoe on an animal's hoof if this animal is to be used as a draught, pack or riding animal.
Specialist training at farriery schools may only be carried out by certified and state-recognized farriery instructors.
Examination certificates in the field of farriery and horseshoeing obtained outside of Germany can be equated in accordance with the Farriery Recognition Ordinance. This ordinance also regulates the procedure for state recognition for persons with equivalent examination certificates.
For training completed in Germany:
- Identity document
- state recognition as a farrier or farrier's assistant,
- at least five years' experience as a farrier,
- annual attendance of further training courses during this period and
- the required professional and occupational knowledge,
- a successfully passed examination to become an apprentice farrier.
For persons with examination certificates obtained outside Germany:
- Identity document,
- equivalent examination certificate,
- proof of the reliability required to exercise the profession (application for a certificate of good conduct or submission of a confirmation from the country in which the examination certificate was obtained, which shows that no violations of animal welfare have been committed,
- at least five years' experience as a farrier or farrier's assistant,
- annual attendance of further training events during this period and
- the required professional and occupational knowledge.
State recognition as an apprentice farrier is granted if the following requirements are met:
- State recognition as a farrier,
- at least five years' experience as a farrier,
- annual attendance of further training courses during this period,
- the required professional and occupational pedagogical knowledge and
- a successfully passed examination to become an apprentice farrier.
Is based on the respective administrative fee schedule of the federal state or on the fee statutes of the authorities responsible under federal state law.

If you have submitted an application for recognition, the responsible office will process it promptly.
Anyone who intentionally or negligently carries out farriery and hoof trimming as a farrier or specialist training at farriery schools as a farriery instructor without the required state recognition is acting in breach of the regulations (Section 9 HufBeschlG).
