To obtain the key numbers 96 (trailer) and 196 (light motorcycle), you must complete a driver training course in each case, which is specified in the Driver's License Ordinance (FeV).

With the code number B96 you are allowed to drive motor vehicles of class B with a trailer with a permissible total mass of more than 750 kg. The permissible total mass may exceed 3,500 kg, but may not exceed 4,250 kg.

The key number B196 allows you to drive motorcycles (also with sidecar) with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cm³. The engine power must not exceed 11 kW. The ratio of power to weight must not exceed 0.1 kW/kg.

In order to obtain these key figures, you must complete a driver training course, which is specified in the Driving Permit Ordinance (FeV).

For the key number 96 (trailer):

You must be at least 18 years old, or 17 years old in the case of accompanied driving.

You must have completed and be able to provide proof of driver training of at least 7 hours (at least 2.5 hours of theoretical training, at least 3.5 hours of practical training).

You must hold a class B driver's license or meet the requirements for obtaining it.

For key number 196 (light motorcycle):

You must be at least 25 years old.

You must have held a class B license for at least 5 years.

You must complete and be able to prove that you have completed at least 9 lessons of 90 minutes each (at least 4 lessons of theory and 5 lessons of practice).

• The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).
• If the driver's license is sent directly to the home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

The period between the completion of the B 196 driver training and the registration of the key number 196 must not exceed 1 year.

The key number B96 is valid throughout the European Union (EU).

Apart from the key number B196, there is also the possibility of extending the driving license class B by the trailer class E. This makes it possible to drive even larger vehicle combinations. Thus, with driving license class BE, vehicle combinations consisting of a towing vehicle of class B and a trailer or semi-trailer can be driven, provided that the permissible total mass of the trailer or semi-trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.

The key number 196 is a national key number and is therefore only valid in Germany.

With the registration of the key number B196 no driving license of the class A1 is acquired. For this reason, it cannot be used to upgrade to class A2, for example.
