If you want to drive a car weighing up to 3,500 kg, you must apply for a category Bdriving license.

Driving license category B refers to the normal car driving license.

With driving license class B, you can drive motor vehicles with a maximum permissible total mass of 3,500 kg. The vehicle may also not be designed for more than eight people (in addition to the driver).

With a category B driving license, you can transport trailers with a maximum permissible mass of no more than 750 kg. If the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle combination does not exceed 3,500 kg, the maximum permissible mass of the trailer may also exceed 750 kg.

The category B driving license is issued for an unlimited period.

Photo ID (identity card or passport (if passport is presented: enclose a current registration certificate from the registration office responsible for the main place of residence))

Current photo, 45 x 35 mm in portrait format and without a border (so-called biometric passport photo) - frontal shot, without headgear and without covering the eyes

Proof of first aid training. Certificates of participation in a first aid training course are valid for an unlimited period of time as corresponding proof when applying for a driver's license.

Eye test certificate from an optician or certificate/opinion from an ophthalmologist (must not be older than 2 years at the time of application)

Details of the driving school

You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The minimum age is 18 years. You can apply for a driver's license at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.

• The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
• If the driving license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

You will receive your first driving license on probation. The probationary period lasts 2 years.

Driving license issued for the first time for category B

Driving license category B allows you to drive motor vehicles (except motorcycles):

up to 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight (GVW)

with up to 8 seats (in addition to the driver's seat)

also with a trailer (GVW 750 kg)

also with a heavier trailer, provided the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg
