After successful completion of your training in Germany, your residence permit can be extended for a maximum of 12 months in order to look for a job.

If you have successfully completed school or company training in Germany, you can be granted a residence permit to look for a job.

The residence permit will be issued for a limited period of time directly following your previous training. An extension is possible if the maximum period of 12 months was not utilized when the permit was first issued. If you do not find a job during this period, an extension is also excluded. You are then obliged to leave the Federal territory.

The aim of the search can also be self-employment. The residence permit allows unrestricted gainful employment.

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute as well as a valid residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment after successfully completing school or company training in Germany.

• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• Your livelihood is secured.
• Your identity has been clarified.

Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee waiver may be considered.

The extension of your residence permit must be applied for at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence.

• Depending on the foreigners authority and your request, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
• If the application is only possible in person, arrange an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office.
• During the appointment, your application will be received and your supporting documents will be reviewed (please bring them with you to the appointment). Your fingerprints will be taken for the issuance of the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
• In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Aliens' Registration Office.
